5 Reasons Why it’s Safer to Specify, than go “To Bid”!

Ever wanted something, but weren’t sure who to lean on, so you figured you’d crowd source suggestions? That works perfectly for certain things, but when it comes to Custom Lighting for your projects (aka your portfolio and reputation), we definitely suggest you lean on us for consultation as you start building your specs. Here are 5-reasons you should always specify us, instead of leaving your specs “to bid”.

  1. Stay Good with the Ownership: It happens too often, when a designer shows ownership the design intent, but when it gets to manufacturing, the design is simply not possible from an engineering/weight/structural standpoint. That re-design is never a happy one. Avoid this by including us in your spec building process, so we can give you honest feedback on engineering, materials, budget, weight and more…

  2. Avoid a Bidding War: Although it probably sounds great to have manufacturers fighting to work with you, the problem that you’ll encounter is that in bidding wars, a lot of design details important to you can be missed — or even consciously left out— in order outbid competitors. That is just not worth the few dollars you might save.

  3. Say no to Surprises: Why trust a random manufacturer with your portfolio, if they don’t know you and your project needs intimately? With custom work, there is too much room for unwanted surprises. When your name and reputation is on every space you design, its always safest to specify us so we can be involved from the get-go.

  4. Value Service: When fixtures go out for bid, everyone is just comparing fixture costs as a line item. But custom work IS service oriented work. When you’re talking through shop drawings, finish samples, lead times and all the hands-on technical needs of getting your custom lighting to the property, you definitely don’t want to just depend on a random company who outbid the rest. You want service.

  5. Partnership — not project — driven: When you specify us, you are joining our company ethos of being partnership driven… not project driven. Partnership driven means being honest, accessible, upfront, and transparent - even when it hurts our bottom line. The bidding process lends itself to being project driven, just chasing that PO, at any cost, and usually at a cost to you.
